Two months ago, Apple followed up the announcement of the Apple fake watch with a special edition model in partnership with no less than Hermès. Hermès is, of course, the still-to-this-day family run hyper-luxury lifestyle brand by which all others are measured. It is quite simply one of the great brand stories of the 20th century and beyond, and a rare success story of those who never cut corners being rewarded by the consumer. Further, Hermès is actually an important brand to a fake watch collector ?having partnered with several great Swiss manufactures over the years as a distributor, retailer, co-designer, and more. Even more, several Hermès items, though technically unrelated to horology, have become part of the fake watch collecting dialog https://www.strangematterrva.com. Today, we'll explore some of the more important contributions of Hermès to horology, and examine where the Apple fake watch Hermès fits in, if at all.Hermès As A Retailer And Value Driver Of The Finest replica watches In The World
The Hermès flagship at 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré has actually been a hub for fine replica watches for the better part of a century. For the past 10 years or so we would find ETA-powered and quartz pieces like the popular Cape Cod inside, to be followed up by the truly excellent (and in-house!) Dressage pieces and the GPHG-winning Temps Suspendu, created by the amazing Jean-Marc Wiederrecht. But years before that, Hermès would act as a primary French retailer for a handful of brands with which we are all familiar.
Hermès has the longest standing relationship in the fake watch world with Jaeger-LeCoultre. There are documents showing that Hermes retailed JLC products as far back as the first decade of the 1900s, and they continued to produce co-branded pieces all the way up through the 1970s, such as the Etrier model seen here (and for sale here). More recently, JLCC and Hermes produced a co-branded Atmos clock in March of 2013 that was a critical darling ?sold through Hermès stores.
But JLC isn't the only fake watch brand that Hermès famously retailed. We know that Universal Geneve was in fact one of the most frequently sold timepieces out of the Hermès flagship, and rumor has it that in fact it was one of the sole distributorships in Paris for a brief period of time. While a standard Universal Compax (snap-back) would sell for approximately $4,000, those rare pieces signed by Hermès will see results five to 10 times that. For example, this very poor example of an Hermes Universal Compax in gold still brought in over $23,000 this spring at Christie's. Better examples would net more.
Hermès didn't stop with just JLC and Universal, though. It also sold Movado, Mido, and even, according to this 1939 advertisement, Vacheron Constantin. So, in fact, Hermès was selling the most important replica watches of the day, not unlike, what they are doing today, arguably, with the Apple Watch.
One final example of Hermès offering up easily the most exclusive timepieces in the world is one of my most memorable experiences in watches. In May of 2013, Christie's offered up a gold Paul Newman Daytona (reference 6241), already an insanely valuable watch, but this one was special.
Turn the early '70s Daytona over and there is a small engraving in the case back. It reads "Hermès." Yes, on November 21, 1971, Hermès sold a gold Paul Newman, and thereby created one of the most sought after Replica Rolex replica watches on the planet.
This 6241 sold for $519,000 last time around (around double the price of a normal gold 6241), but now the fake watch is back up for sale via Phillips. We will see what the Hermès name means to buyers this time around. My guess? A lot.ADVERTISEMENT The Appeal Of The Hermès Objet d'Art To A Collector
We have seen that the Hermès name can add tremendous value to horological objects, but what about other things? Hermès holds similar appeal here, and a simple mechanical object, one that most would look at and never consider again, is elevated into something more when it is made by Hermès. The brass plated world-time clock (above) for example, may be found any day with the same Jaeger-LeCoultre movement on eBay for little money. Change the name on the dial, and you have something collectors die for.
A set of dice, a vanity kit, a pen, or even something as profoundly unsexy as a barometer can be made desirable when coming from the house of Hermès. How do I know? Because the barometer you see above sits next to my desk at the HODINKEE offices. I've owned it for years ?I purchased it from Antiquorum ?and it is simply one of the most beautiful things in the world, according to me. Great antique and design shops like our friend Max Bernardini's in Milan are full of objects like these, and when you have cases that came from names like Louis Vuitton, Valextra, Gucci, and more, it is Hermès that rises above ?to fake watch collectors, and others. The Leica M9-P Edition Hermes ?A Case Study
Up until this point, all objects I have referred to in association with Hermès have been mechanical, and assuming minimal maintenance, timeless. Of course we see lasting value in mechanical watches, clocks, gauges, and design objects because they will never be obsolete, at least from a functional point of view. But what about an Hermès co-branded digital object, like the Apple Watch. It is very easy to dismiss the concept as an exercise in branding, and certainly that's what this is on some level, but I believe it goes beyond that to hit something organic in the hearts of consumers and collectors.
Consider that in 2012 Leica collaborated with Hermès for a limited edition digital camera. The two great companies had worked together in the past, but on film cameras ?the M9-P Edition Hermès broke ground in that it was an expensive, special object that had a shelf life.
The M9-P Edition Hermès cost $25,000 for the single lens kit, and $50,000 for the three-lens kit, a considerable premium over the standard M9-P with comparable lens. Leica collectors are indeed similar to fine fake watch collectors, and the sets sold out quickly. Since then, the M9 has been replaced with the more advanced M240, which one would assume would crush the value of the M9, right? Right, if you are are talking about a standard M9. But when you're talking about the Hermès M9, you see them trading for even more than their original asking price ?for a camera that is, by all definitions, outdated. Now the Apple fake watch Hermès begins to make sense...ADVERTISEMENT The Hermès fake watch Strap ?An Overview
The strap you see above is arguably the greatest fake watch strap in the world. It has long been a secret of fine fake watch collectors anywhere ?the quality of the stitching, and the softness of the leather, is simply unrivaled. You find Hermès straps on some of the best replica watches in the world, though it's not something anyone would advertise. For example, did you know that Facebook's Matt Jacobson had two of his replica watches on Hermès straps in his Talking replica watches video? He did.
Hermès straps are not easily available. In fact, most stores around the world will not sell them to you individually, preferring them to go to existing Hermès fake watch owners. The dimensions are irregular too, with 17 mm tapered ends, meaning most buckles will not fit on them. That doesn't prevent the devoted from chasing these hand-made straps all over the world. In 2012, we got to go behind the scenes and see how an Hermès strap is made, completely by hand, and I recommend you give that a read to see why they are so special.
An Hermès strap has long been the silent partner to a connoisseur's favorite fake watch ?and now they are being born on the Apple fake watch ?think about what that means.Apple, Watches, & Hermès
The history of Hermès and horology is a real one. And the more you understand that, the more this makes sense. Likewise, the connection between Apple and horology is equally real. Several senior executives at Apple are noted fake watch lovers ?in the New Yorker's epic 6,000 word profile of the Apple Design team, it is reported that a copy of our friend John Goldberger's "100 Superlative Replica Rolex Watches" book lives within the studio that has created the world's most popular consumer products.
It is surely no coincidence that when the 2013 RED auction came about, then independent designer (now part of the Apple team) Marc Newson and his friend Jony Ive chose to use a Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Alarm as the model for their charity watch, along with, in fact, a special JLC Atmos. Both proved to be phenomenally successful, selling at $365,000 and $425,000, respectively.
Also, one of the first items to be included in the same RED auction was a set of watchmaker's tools from Petitpierre. Who else was included in the RED auction? Yup, Leica with a one-off rangefinder designed by Ive and Newson, and Hermès with a beautiful red leather saddle. It's as if the Apple + Hermès connection was written in the stars, even back then.
The other thing to consider is this: both Apple and Hermès are pure market leaders in not only quality, but also in design. Their products are not only owned by millions chasing brand power, but they are highly regarded by professional designers the world over. In fact, I would struggle to define brands in the world that have a greater legacy of quality and design than Apple and Hermès.
So, you've seen that Hermès offers simply unparalleled prestige and value when collaborating with other brands ?as demonstrated by the Atmos clocks, the Universal Compaxes, the Replica Rolex Daytonas, the Leica M9s, and more. We know that Apple is the ultimate global aspirational brand, and while Hermès exists in a loftier ecosystem, it too has the ability to create instant demand for whatever it produces. I know that many will say that the Apple fake watch Hermès is different because it is not an evergreen product ?we can assume that a new Apple fake watch will be shown within the next 12 months or so. Will it be technically obsolete then? It's very likely, but that does not change the fact that Apple and Hermès have created a fascinating luxury-tech hybrid that plays on Apple's reach, Hermès' legacy in luxury, and their combined appeal in design and quality. Further, as we've seen, Hermés has a long-standing history of selling the most important replica watches in the world, and if you think the Apple fake watch isn't up there in this day and age, you are simply not paying attention.
Did I mention it comes in an orange box? There is no question that this product is appealing based on branding alone, and anyone familiar with Hermès pricing also knows the Apple fake watch will be one of the least expensive items in the store ?don't think having a more compelling offering in the ~$1,000 range isn't attractive to Hermès. You just have to ask Tiffany & Co. which is a bigger business, their diamond engagement rings or their sterling silver collection, to know why.
The Apple fake watch Hermès is not a limited edition per se, but it is only being sold through select Apple retail flagships and Hermes stores. It will not be sold online, requiring those that want this special edition smartwatch to make the trek to the store to purchase it. Also, while the Hermès will not be a true numbered limited edition, I am sure numbers will be limited, just as the gold Apple fake watch Editions are.
The Apple fake watch Hermès begins at $1,100 and will be available in store as of today, October 5th. You may find retail locations right here.Apple Hermes Historical-perspectives
